How to install WordPress on the Root Layer

When installing WordPress on your website design, something that has never been made clear, is how to install it on the root layer of your website. Unless your WordPress Blog is a secondary part to your website, we would always recommend installing WordPress on the root directory.

This is better for SEO, usability and aesthetics. Keeping your whole website inside a sub-folder doesn’t really have any advantages, unless like we said, WordPress is going to be a separate and secondary part of your main website.

So whether you are starting a new installation or moving an established one, this is how we would recommend doing it:

  1. Once installed, simply click onto ‘Settings’.
  2. Locate ‘Wordpress Address (URL)’ and ‘Site Address (URL)’
  3. Remove the folder leaving just the domain name with forward slash
  4. Save Changes
  5. Don’t Panic! You should now see a 404 page.
  6. Next, simply migrate your files from the WordPress folder, onto your root directory.
  7. Don’t forget to also move the ‘.htaccess’ if you have set up Permalinks.
  8. Log back in and test.
  9. That’s it! You’re Done.

    Hey
I was just looking for a video like yours ;-) . But where you loose me is where you say ” I just open dreamweaver.. etc”
Well when people don’t have dreamweaver, then what??

I use cyberduck as FTP. But I can’t find the root.
When I am on my FTP I have: folder called: cgi-bin and then a folder called: www. Thats where I should upload my WP files to, the hosting company said. (Its OHV.fr)
But my domain comes up with http://www.domain.fr/wordpress.

So I don”t really know what to do know when I can’t find any root file or something and don’t have dreamweaver.

Hope that you have an idea.

Thank you from a beginner ;-)
    Best
    Anders

Hi Anders, thank you for your question. Although I am using Dreamweaver in the tutorial, it is simply to take advantage of the built in FTP client. Cyberduck should be fairly similar in terms of access and what you can see. Did your hosting company ask you to add the files into the /www/ folder? Or on the layer before that?

Thanks for this video. I have a similar question as Evette… My wordpress site is on a host server in a sub directory so I do not use dreamweaver. My question is this: How do I move the files from sub directory into root (public_html) and will this work? Any help will be appreciated!
