Remove white backgrounds with ‘Multiply’ in Photoshop

Posted on Friday 27th May 2011 by James Bavington 2 Comments

In this week’s web design video, we share a great tutorial for removing white backgrounds from images in Photoshop. Using the Layer Blend ‘Multiply’ we can remove the white background without having to cut or mask it. Like I mention in the video, this is one of many ways to remove backgrounds from images. What’s particularly effective about this method, is the ability to maintain background details such as reflections or shadows, as demonstrated with the teddy-bear in the video.

It’s worth noting that this tutorial is particularly effective when using photographs of models or product images that have been shot white a pure, white background. Like I mention in the video – these types of images, and the tutorial in general, will only be effective if you are looking to place the image on a light, pastel colored background.

Wow, thanks for this video. You basically just changed my ‘digital’ life. I had no clue about this process, so I have always spent pain-staking time with masks, erasers, etc to remove the white background of something. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
