An introduction to JQuery from scratch

Posted on Monday 28th Dec 2009 by Michael Angrave No Comments

Welcome to the introductory post for the forth coming 6-part series on how to get the most from JQuery user experience. I will not only be looking into the benefits and uses for the up and coming Jquery platform, but more importantly, how you can use this to great effect within your website design.

JQuery is renowned for it’s simplistic yet effective functionality, and is surprisingly easy to get to grips with. The aim of this series is to gradually lead you away from using the ever growing vast resources of code snippets and lead you towards writing it from scratch.

Website Design and JQuery

The Importance of JQuery in Website Design

As web technologies continue to evolve, it is evident that in recent years, more and more focus of modern website design is targeted towards enhanced user experience or UX. JQuery is a simple but effective library created for giving you the control of AJAX routines.

With enhancements such as on-the-fly form validation and search functionality, content consolidation through sliders, tabs, accordions etc, and general real time manipulation of CSS selectors, JQuery has been making web designers weak at the knees since it’s release in 2006.

JQuery in your Website Design

As with many other things in the field of website design, new techniques and software, really come into their own, when they fit seamlessly into your website design work flow. I remember back when I first started producing professional website design, and I remember testing and customising a number eCommerce platforms, before deciding simply on the one that allowed me to integrate the system into my website design, not the other way round.

I feel it is equally important to note that JQuery allows you to add heightened user experience, within the boundaries of your design, as is surprisingly easy to start to use in the same way that you would write your own css and xhtml.

Topics covered in the series…

  • 1. Downloading and loading the library
  • 2. Basic Animation
  • 3. Advanced Selectors
  • 4. Basic Form Validation
  • 5. JQuery within my website design
  • 6. More Examples and Further Resources

This comprehensive introductory series begins next week with the first post covering how load and use the library in the most efficient way.
